April 22 at 4:30 PM – Maclean Prize and Junior Orator Awards
All junior Whig-Clio members are eligible to participate. Contestants must choose one of the topics below and prepare a speech of 5-8 minutes. The contest is neither an extemporaneous contest nor a debating contest. Rather, it is an oratory contest, and a contestant’s choice of topic or format is less than important than the eloquence with which s/he orates on it. The judges will select four winners for the Junior Orator Award and one recipient of the Maclean Prize (currently $600). Please email WWHDP Chair Ben Weisman (bweisman@princeton.edu) by April 20 if you would like to participate, and you will be assigned a time to speak.
Speech Topics:
-What is the one thing Princeton should change most?
-Historian Henry Adams contends, “Nothing in education is so astonishing as the amount of ignorance it accumulates in the form of inert facts.” Give a speech about an experience that has educated you beyond what would have been possible in the classroom.
-What does it mean to be a patriot?
April 22 at 6:00 PM – Walter E. Hope Prize Debate for Freshmen
All Freshmen members of Whig-Clio are eligible to participate in the Hope Debating Contest. A resolution will be posted on the morning of the contest. When contestants arrive, a coin will be flipped to determine the side they will defend. The “debate” is untraditional in that it consists of only two speeches. The top two speakers from any individual debate will receive a prize. Please email WWHDP Chair Ben Weisman (bweisman@princeton.edu) by April 20 if you would like to participate, and you will be assigned a time to speak.
