SUMMARY:The International Relations Council Presents: A Conversation with Professor Zaid Al-Ali
DESCRIPTION:Free & Open to the Public \nProfessor Al-Ali will be joining us for a conversation discussing his career in international relations\, his work at present\, and what different paths within the field can look like. Audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions at the end of the discussion. \nZaid Al-Ali is an independent scholar and a lawyer.  He specializes in constitutional negotiations\, peace negotiations and commercial arbitration.  His primary field of academic interest is comparative constitutional law and constitutional negotiations in Arab-majority countries (also known as the Middle East). His legal practice tends to focus on disputes in the energy sector. He is widely considered to be among the leading experts on Iraq\, on Arab constitutions\, and on conflict dynamics in the Arab region.  He has published widely on comparative constitutional law and on Iraq. In addition to the above\, Zaid has taught at Princeton University\, Sciences-Po (Paris)\, the University of Carthage (Tunis) and the Central European University (Budapest).  Zaid was a fellow at the Berlin Institute of Advanced Studies (Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin) from 2019 to 2020.  He has written for the New York Times\, the Washington Post\, the New York Review of Books\, etc.

Leaf\, former Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates\, for a fireside chat on current and historical developments in the Near East region. \nBarbara Leaf served as Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs from 2022 to 2025\, where she developed and implemented U.S. policy across a region spanning 18 countries from Morocco to the Arabian Peninsula. In this role\, she led interagency coordination and diplomatic engagement on a wide range of political\, economic\, and security issues across the Middle East and North Africa. \nPrior to that\, she served as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for the Middle East and North Africa on the National Security Council. She was U.S. Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates from 2014 to 2018\, and also served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for the Arabian Peninsula and for Iraq. In 2006\, she became the first Director of the State Department’s Office of Iranian Affairs. \nA career member of the Foreign Service\, Ambassador Leaf has held overseas assignments in Sarajevo\, Paris\, Cairo\, Tunis\, Kuwait\, Jerusalem\, and Port-au-Prince. Ambassador Leaf holds a B.A. from the College of William & Mary and an M.A. from the University of Virginia\, and speaks Arabic\, French\, Serbo-Croatian\, and Italian. \nCosponsors: Center for International Security Studies (CISS) and Program on History and the Practice of Diplomacy

DESCRIPTION:Free & Open to the Public \nJoin us for a timely and engaging conversation as Udi Ofer sits down with Nahal Zamani to explore the power and complexity of state-level advocacy. Drawing on her leadership at the ACLU and years of experience advancing campaigns on issues like criminal justice reform\, immigrants’ rights\, and government accountability\, Zamani will offer an inside look at how coordinated state campaigns drive national impact. Moderated by Ofer\, a leading voice in civil rights and policy reform\, this conversation will unpack the strategies\, partnerships\, and challenges shaping advocacy work today.  \nNahal Zamani is the Director of State Campaigns at the ACLU National Political Advocacy Department\, where she leads a team supporting shared political and advocacy campaigns with our 54 affiliates. Before the ACLU\, Nahal served as the Senior Vice President of Programs at the State Innovation Exchange (SiX)\, a national strategy center for state legislators. At SiX\, Nahal oversaw six program teams and participated on the Executive Team. Before SiX\, Nahal was the first-ever Director of Movement Building at Demos\, a national progressive think tank\, and directed the partnerships and campaigns teams.\nFor over a decade\, Nahal managed impactful campaigns at the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR). She advocated regularly before elected officials\, the UN\, and the public. At CCR\, Nahal’s work included challenging the NYPD’s abusive stop-and-frisk practices and other discriminatory policing practices\, criminal justice\, economic and gender justice\, immigrants’ rights\, and government abuse of power. Nahal also was a founding member and served on the Steering and Executive Committees of the Communities United for Police Reform campaign in New York City. At the start of her career\, Nahal also worked with the ACLU\, overseeing advocacy campaigns with the Human Rights Program and supporting litigation efforts with the National Security Project. Nahal’s work has been covered in The New York Times\, MSNBC\, Al Dia\, City and State New York\, Sirius XM\, and BRIC TV. She holds an M.A. in Human Rights from Columbia University and a B.A. from Rutgers University \nUdi Ofer is a civil rights lawyer and policy expert focused on criminal justice reform. He led national advocacy at the ACLU\, driving major reforms on policing and incarceration\, and previously headed the ACLU of New Jersey. He now teaches public policy at Princeton University\, where he leads a policy advocacy clinic.

Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in a moderated discussion\, continuing Whig-Clio’s long tradition of fostering thoughtful political discourse. \nPhilip D. Murphy is an American politician and former Governor of the state of New Jersey\, serving from 2018 to 2026. A member of the Democratic Party\, Murphy previously built a career in finance at Goldman Sachs and later served as U.S. Ambassador to Germany under President Barack Obama. As governor\, he prioritized progressive policies including raising the minimum wage\, expanding access to healthcare\, investing in clean energy\, and legalizing recreational marijuana. He also launched a clemency initiative aimed at addressing inequities in the criminal justice system. Murphy is known for his focus on economic equity\, public education\, and strengthening New Jersey’s social safety net.

DESCRIPTION:Join Princeton’s International Relations Council for a diplomacy workshop on India–Pakistan relations. While rooted in a complex and often volatile history\, this session will also focus on what lies ahead: how shifting geopolitical alignments\, domestic political transformations\, nuclear deterrence dynamics\, and evolving security doctrines will shape the trajectory of one of the world’s most consequential bilateral relationships.  \nFollowing the talk\, participants will engage in an interactive simulation that takes them back to the moment of Partition in 1947. Stepping into the roles of key political leaders and negotiators\, participants will grapple with the high-stakes decisions surrounding territorial division\, governance\, and communal tensions that shaped the creation of India and Pakistan. \nGuest Speaker: Dr. Sajid Shapoo \nSajid Shapoo is an alumnus of the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs and a highly decorated senior officer of the Indian Police Service (IPS)\, with over two decades of experience in counterterrorism\, intelligence\, and internal security. \nOver the course of his career\, Shapoo has held several senior leadership positions\, including Inspector General of Law & Order\, Inspector General of Anti-Naxal Operations\, and Additional Director General of Special Armed Forces\, where he managed complex internal security challenges and counterinsurgency efforts. \nHe was also the first officer selected to serve in India’s National Investigation Agency—the country’s premier federal counterterrorism body—where he led and supervised investigations into some of the most significant terrorism cases in India\, including the Mumbai terror attacks conspiracy\, the Patna serial blasts\, and the Bodh Gaya bombings. \nFor his service\, Shapoo has been awarded some of India’s highest policing honors\, including the President’s Police Gallantry Medal (twice)\, recognizing exceptional bravery in the line of duty\, as well as the Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the Home Minister’s Meritorious Service Medal for his distinguished career. \nIn addition to his operational experience\, Shapoo has contributed to academic and policy discourse on terrorism and security\, having taught courses on terrorism and politics at institutions such as Columbia University and the City University of New York. His research and professional expertise focus on terrorism\, ideological drivers of political violence\, and security dynamics in South Asia\, making him uniquely positioned to provide insight into the future of India–Pakistan relations.
