The American Whig-Cliosophic Society at Princeton University will host a formal ceremony honoring Governor Phil Murphy with the prestigious James Madison Award for Distinguished Public Service. As the Society’s highest honor, awarded since 1960, the prize recognizes individuals who have demonstrated a lifelong commitment to the betterment of society through public service.
The event will feature the formal presentation of the award, followed by remarks from Governor Murphy reflecting on his career in public service and the challenges facing democratic governance today. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in a moderated discussion, continuing Whig-Clio’s long tradition of fostering thoughtful political discourse.
Philip D. Murphy is an American politician and former Governor of the state of New Jersey, serving from 2018 to 2026. A member of the Democratic Party, Murphy previously built a career in finance at Goldman Sachs and later served as U.S. Ambassador to Germany under President Barack Obama. As governor, he prioritized progressive policies including raising the minimum wage, expanding access to healthcare, investing in clean energy, and legalizing recreational marijuana. He also launched a clemency initiative aimed at addressing inequities in the criminal justice system. Murphy is known for his focus on economic equity, public education, and strengthening New Jersey’s social safety net.
